KFC vs Cafe De Coral

Coincidentally, both KFC and Cafe De Coral are advertising about their dinner specials at the same time. At night, you can now enjoy a proper "sit-down" dinner at KFC while Cafe De Coral serves make-to-order dishes. The thinking is logical and obvious : at night fastfood restaurants are usually less busy and with these dinner specials, they can demand higher prices. Rentals and wages are so high in HK and this is how these fastfood chains strive to make extra bugs. Don't know whether they will be able to steal some business from 茶餐廳 and other "sit-down" restaurants. But to me (a stubborn consumer), KFC and Cafe De Coral are fastfood restaurants. I won't go there for 小菜 or set dinner. These are the places where I eat and run. There are more choices and varieties at 茶餐廳 for the similar price.

Looks like you have a new start-up. It's quite a competitive market on one hand but the market does lack good design houses on the other. I wish you every success.

So these fastfood chains are fated to have the empty seats at night?

Well, offering dinner specials is a way to fill up the empty seats at night. I wouldn't say it is a bad strategy as I can't think of any other way. But the trouble is with consumer perception. They are fastfood restaurants which satisfy the need of "eat and run". Dinner is an important meal for relaxation, enjoyment and gather-up with family and friends. Fastfood reataurants won't be our top of mind choices, right ?

Just noticed recently that prices of Fairwood and Cafe de corol have been increasing rapiding, obviously market players found price war finally just hurt profit, it has become more of a value game now. Hence, they are now striving hard to launch new dishes and better quality food, it's definitely an attempt to bring value. They need to give a reason to increase price.

You are right about "eat and run", yes, they are still doing well on "speed", and much more - better meals.

What do you think?

Yes, they are not cheap eats anymore. It must be the high rents.

Well, we all deserve better meals during dinner after long day's work but is speed something consumers want for dinner ? Speed and better food are just rational reasons. Dinners are for friends and family get together and pampering oneself. Is speed important ?
