Mobile phone trend

Let's change topic from the promotions that we have talked about these few days. After seeing this ad of LG, it gets me to think about the trend of mobile phone market. I'm not a fortune teller and hope everyone will share their views. It seems to me that various mobile phone brands are coming up with phones with more powerful camera and MP3 functions. Like this LG ad, it is saying the phone has the power of everything one. It has 800 mega pixels, face detection function and ISO 1600. All these functions are comparable to many DCs. The question is whether phone will replace the demand for DCs. Open for discussion please.

No, don't think so.

The ad is too greedy. Wants to highlight its super DC function while selling the mobile is multi-function. "Kinder egg"? Fulfill your 3 wishes at once?

Actually, I dont think that people want a mobile with a great no. of functions as normally we think that the more the functions in one machine, the more chance the phone will easily wear out. Most male friends around me are those who are the on-searching "experts" of these gadgets, normally, they told me that they dont like the cameras inserted in the phones as they think the photos of the camera cant as good as the DCs,and they also commented that they will not buy the phones only becuase of the cameras, but the practicability as well as the durability of the phone since some phones are really very "fragile" and the users have to always visit the customer service department for maintenance very often, that really very annoying and hard to establish a good image.

So if the brand like the one above would like to focus on their mutli-function strategy, that's may not be very attractive to those males who have DCs or who have demand on the professional photos, since no matter the outcome or the feeling on holding the camera are totally different( some friends even told me that when you pick up a camera, you look pro and cool, I think this kind of feeling cant be replaced by this small gadget!)!!

I also buy a mobile phone with powerful camera function (nokia N85). It's because I need to monitor my team whether they perform well and display well in the roadshow. Mobile phone with strong camera function assist me that I do not need to bring DC. One machine already serve my needs. As a woman, I already need to bring a lot of stuffs in my handbag. This small gadget can release my handbag weight ;-)

I can see that when normal DC is facing the challenge of muti-functional mobile phone, the trend of DC tends to sell "professional". You can see that those professional cameras DSLR have developed simplier version (入門機) with lower price to attract customers switching from normal DC. Is it a good method to survive?? I don't know~

This is a new line of sport watches from PUMA called Agitiation. You may fall from the chair like I did when you read the copies. I can understand the thinking behind the ad : when you sell a plastic watch at HK$550, you would just need to think about some catchy selling points for it. The biggest selling point of this watch is the strap. There are holes in the strap (so called cheese cut-out) to make the watch as light as 45 grams so that you can run faster ! What's more, there are so many colours to choose from. It doesn't matter whether you have a fair or tanned skin complexion ... there's one for you ... I bet this watch is produced and marketed under licence granted by the brand owner of PUMA. Too bad that the licence is given to the wrong hands. It's Ok if this watch doesn't sell as it is the business of the licensee after all. However, a BS ad like this may have negative image impact on the PUMA brand in a way.

Giordano's frog

One student asked me why Giordano re-uses its frog logo from ages ago. I said I know don't know. Really ! Giordano is a value-for-money brand. If it prints its logo onto the T-shirts and jeans, be it the frog or anything that says "Giordano", will sales increase ? Probably not. Giordano is a brand you wear but you don't want to admit. It's not a brand like Nike or LV that can uplift your image after all. So if it puts the frog back onto its product, there may be adverse effect on its sales. I haven't visited its store at the time of writing but according to its website, it hasn't added back the frog to its products. I wouldn't do that either. So what is the point of having the frog back in its print and advertising materials ? To remind us of its good old days ?

Benefiber ad

Benefiber is quite a new product concept. Fiber powder that you can add to your favourite food, making fiber intake easy. I'm not sure whether such a new concept would be accepted by consumers. But one thing for sure. It's rather inappropriate to use 韜韜 as the endorser. He's a cute old man and I personally quite like him. He loves eating and the more I see him eating in front of the camera, the more I'm worried about his health condition. It looks like he's going to burst ! The question is whether he's a credible one to endorse a diet-realted health food at all. It may be more credible for him to endorse a slimming house when he manages to lose 100 lb.
