Public Bank TVC

There is cut-throat competition in the loan product market. When a certain market is getting more and more competitive, we will start to see more advertising that are "over-the-top". That is very common when all have run out of ideas on what message to send to appeal to the consumers. In my last post about UA e-Cash, an attempt was made to trigger the need for borrowing for love and relationship. Now we have another one from Public Bank playing on marriage. One million dollar cash + a flat + a car ! What kind of concept is it sending ? Some believe advertising has the power to shape social trends and the way people think and act while some believe advertising mirrors values rather than sets them. Which one is true ?

Undoubtedly the living standard in Hong Kong has been raising through out decades with all known. Public Bank in this ad reflects values from a brunch of people who pursue high standard of living.
However, what is the meaning of love and marriage? I think Public Bank somewhat detour the 'true' value of it. Instead, it weighs off its meaning in terms of money and luxury lives and therefore, bring up their bank service.

What I see advertising is one of many communication channels between norms. Not just a reflection of some people values, but an element to composite the overall social trends as it is an influential tool of communication. Maybe I am off topic now, but to me, it is a matter of corporative ethics on producing ad.
